Understudied stories of fringes and margins

From understudied stories that give voice to the histories of the NDSM shipyard to music and podcasts from Afaina de Jong's archive — this installation brings feminist and often unheard perspectives on urban development and music with roots in the diaspora to life.

Jesper Buursink and Fouad Lakbir from Stratenmakers Audio Collective have recorded personal stories of people with a connection to the NDSM shipyard: of former employees, migrant workers and pioneering artists and creatives who have each played a role in the history of this special place in their own way.

Listen, watch and discover these understudied perspectives and voices about the city and NDSM.

The installation: Kinship Library at the NDSM shipyard

Kinship Library is a living archive. In this architectural installation by Afaina de Jong, oral histories about the city and specifically about the NDSM shipyard come to life. Visitors are invited to listen to voices and sounds from different perspectives, nooks and crannies in an intuitive way. All stories are digital and can be listened to for a longer period of time via this website.

In this extraordinary installation, you can hear stories about the rich history of NDSM — the past of this unique place and the people who lived and worked there.

Call: Share your NDSM story

Together with Stratenmakers Audiocollectief, we are looking for people who have worked at NDSM or who otherwise have a strong relationship with the shipyard. Maybe because family members have lived or worked here — and they want to talk about it. We collect stories that have rarely been heard. This way, history stays alive and visitors can discover what used to happen at NDSM and who played a role in it.

What does participating mean?
Stratenmakers Audio Collective consists of experienced audio makers who record your story with you. They do this in a place that you choose and in a way that suits you. The stories can be heard from May to October 2025 in the installation at NDSM and online via www.ndsm.nl. They remain available online, even after the installation has been completed, so that we can continue to share the stories.
